A 55-inch TV is measured diagonally, so it is not 55 inches wide. The same care is needed with electric fires: a product’s inch size label may differ from its overall width in millimetres. Should the electric fire be wider than the TV?
It can be, but it does not have to be. A wider fire can balance a large screen and give the media wall a broad, panoramic appearance. A fire with a similar width creates a more compact arrangement. A narrower fire can also work when shelves, cabinetry or the surrounding wall form part of the design.
For a 65-inch TV, for example, the screen is approximately 1,439mm wide. A 1,530mm-wide Rosedale is about 91mm wider overall, while the 1,800mm Deluxe Rosedale creates a broader feature. Compare the visible glass or flame area as well as the casing width before choosing.
Check three different measurements before building
Visible display width: the part of the fire you see in the finished wall. This is particularly useful when comparing its appearance with the TV.
Overall appliance dimensions: the complete fire body and any specified trim. These help you understand the physical size of the model.
Required recess dimensions: the opening specified in the installation instructions, including any necessary allowances. There is no single standard media wall recess that fits every electric fire.
Wall depth matters too. Allow for the appliance, the specified installation space, the wall construction and its final finish. A shallow appliance does not automatically mean the completed wall can be the same depth as the fire.
Choose your one, two or three-sided layout
The Rosedale and Deluxe Rosedale offer front-only, corner and three-sided configurations. Decide which sides will be visible before the frame is built, because this affects the openings and finishing edges. The New Hawnby offers a slim-frame, front-facing inset look.
Consider the view from your sofa and the room entrance. A three-sided layout may make the flames more visible from different seating positions, while a front-facing layout creates a more enclosed appearance.
How much space should you leave between the fire and TV?
Follow the instructions for both the exact fire model and the television. Required spacing depends on the appliance, heat outlet and installation arrangement; a generic TV-to-fire chart cannot establish a safe clearance.
Keep heater outlets and air intakes clear, and include any soundbar, shelf or mantel when checking the layout. Plan cable routes, power access and future servicing before closing the wall. Where electrical alterations are needed, arrange these with a qualified electrician.
